Sneak peak:
"It was this last piece that slipped from Mariam's fingers, that fell to the wooden floorboards of the kolba and shattered. When Nana saw the bowl, her face flushed red and her upper lip shivered, and her eyes, both the lazy one and the good, settled on Mariam in a flat, unblinking way. Nana looked so mad that Mariam feared the jinn would enter her mother's body again. But the jinn didn't come, not that time. Instead, Nana grabbed Mariam by the wrists, pulled her close, and, through gritted teeth, said, 'You are a clumsy little harami. This is my reward for everything I've endured. An heirloom-breaking, clumsy little harami'" (Hosseini 3-4).

As I first started reading this book, I was really skeptical about the outcome. Since I was scarred by my last SSR book, I was afraid that I wasn't going to have a good experience reading this one. Mrs. Henning recommended that I read this book saying it was "Sad but beautiful." Hearing that it would be sad, I dreaded it at first saying "Here we go again!" I'm SO happy that I continued to read A Thousand Splendid Suns because it was 'beautiful' in every sense of the word. It was also heart wrenching, but I can tell you the beauty compensates for all that was grief-stricken!
With that being said, I would definitely read this book again! I have never come across to a book that I would read again. So with this amazing book, I'm so excited for the journey that it will take me on as I read it a second, third, and fourth time. Even after reading it once, I realize you could comprehend and understand so much more if you read it a second time. There was so much culture I wasn't accustomed to, so I reread certain passages just to understand some of the afghan customs and word choice. It is an excellent read, one that will make you more engrossed as time goes on. Persevere through the beginning, I promise it will be beautiful in the end!
